#16 What's a WIKI??

A Wiki is a quick-to-build, easy-to-edit website on which all information can be edited, changed, or rewritten by the users or members of the site. It is an incredibly useful tool for collaborative writing, pooling knowledge or exchanging ideas, especially on a subject that changes or needs updating frequently.

The word "Wiki" comes from the Hawaiian phrase "wiki wiki", which is commonly used to indicate something fast.

good things bout Wiki's are : Information is quickly added to database. Draws on expertise of readership. Diverse subjects with information derived from the passsions of the readers.

bad things bout Wiki's are : No content control. Editing wars happen when there might be a controversial subject. Not a scholarly source of information.

Possible uses for Wiki's in the library would to keeping an updated Wiki page for your branch...subject lists, book reviews and policies/best practices.

#15 the wall continues

ok going thru the motions here trying to do the process of Maryland 23 things.. its taking a toll!! as much as I am an internet junkie , this new techie side of things has gotten me stumped.

web 2.0 for example is defined (clearly??) as
Web 2.0 is the network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an "architecture of participation," and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences

I could read that 100 times and it will still feel like garbage in garbage out to me. I guess the best way I can manage to understand is that it is the user end of things fueling the changes on the internet and bringing it to a new level~~ but I don't trust my definition of that enuff to stand by it.

as for library 2.0 and the future of libraries:
“Library 2.0 simply means making your library’s space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and collaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives…to make the library a destination and not an afterthought.”

Is that just more gobblygook for hummm making the current technologies that your community is using part of your library world. Ex maybe being here in a primary Jewish community our library users on computers are often using J-date as a way to connect with others. Maybe having a program to give basic instruction on the options that might be available on there would be of interest to our customers.

Exposure to the technologies are somewhat valuable but without the daily need or use of same the usefulness of this time on Maryland 23 things is something I question.

but glad to say finished with # 15!!!

Stuck on #13

We all probably reach it sometime..that point where the techno babble just doesn't sink in the brain and comprehend. Well tagging has done me in! It did help to read the help on Del.icio.us and they say "if you don't get it right away, that's OK-- you don't have to . Tagging is pretty intuitive and can take some practice to fully understand. Try it and experiment a bit! There are no wrong tags."

OK I did sign up, installed the cute little toolbar buttons, put in a key word and made a list of websites. So far I don't see this as all that different than rollyo with that. The BLURRY back up tutorial I suffered through 2 times and took a few notes did little to enlighten me. Ms Otter may have found tagging to be a major bonus in her life but so far my timid steps in the del.icio.us realm have not impressed me.

Tag me if u can but I am at this point still gonna play hide & seek and keep my peeks to other websites.

IT'S OFFICIALLY OPEN!!

After 9 months of reconstruction, 3.5 million!! $$$'s, boxing and unboxing an entire collection of material, as well as major changes in library staff.. the Pikesville Library had it's grand opening ceremony yesterday. Hoooray!! Kudos's for the new improved space, lighting, ceiling, furniture & express checkouts. This is a well deserved upgrade for the very popular hang out for the mega readers in the community. Kinda nice for the staff as well!

Moving on with 23 things (#10-12)

Been on a bit of a hiatus here with the blog..have been keeping some of the other part time librarians on track with their progress along this pathway and now they are ahead of me!!!! ( #11)Looked around at the website http://www.generatorblogspot.com/ and they have an extensive list of online image generators -- I chose this flash pix generator below on right side..the old tree with the hanging sign!! This is the URL for that http://www.profilepitstop.com/myspace_flashpix/ Just a lot of options for something to add to your blog or just to play with on your own.
(#12) Library thing-for those who have not explored this topic or want the quick version of what is it? LibraryThing is an online service to help people catalog their books easily~~ very well set up and easy to negotiate..this is a place I will revist later to check out the hidden treasures that only time can reveal. (#13) Rollyo... great idea..I had no problem with making a nice seach tool to manage my cruise websites under one search window but did have problems trying to add to my blog..Check out the right hand side. I think I did get it to work!!
... and now I am UP to Maryland 23 things # lucky 13 and my brain sayyyyysssss time to let it all simmer for a bit before trying to injest any more.
