D O N E

The journey that began some 3-4 months ago has reached the destination. ALLLL done in the 23 things techno game! It was a bit tough to hang in there and I did for sure learn much along the way.

Highlights were .. the thrill of blogging and seeing your creation come to life online and grow. Flickr fun, library thing, Web 2.0 award winners, & a tiptoe in the podcast world.

Still foggy and most likely ever will be are .....mashups, tagging, what the thrill of youtube is, and finding out that self taught technology is a rough road to travel at times.

I am glad that I completed this and I am happier still it is DONE!!!

Downloadable Audiobooks # 22

Increasingly we are getting questions from the customers here in Pikesville -- like the What the heck is an E-book as the opening. So this is actually useful to me in my daily work here at the library. I did take the guided tour by digital audio which is set up very nicely into separate topics so you can choose which ones are of interest to you. The instructions are very clear and easy to digest. Net library guided tour is not quite as sophisticated. The steps are narrated and illustrated.I am going to give this a try on the computer at home and see if I can be a self user not just a provider of information for the customers. Adding to that lonnnnggg to do list!! First on my list to try ..is Don't sweat the small stuff!! Richard Carlson good one for listening and remembering as often as possible!

Description
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff … and It’s All Small Stuff is a book that shows you how to keep from letting the little things in life drive you crazy. In thoughtful and insightful language, author Richard Carlson reveals ways to calm down in the midst of your incredibly hurried, stress-filled life. You can learn to put things in perspective by making the small daily changes he suggests, including advice such as “Think of your problems as potential teachers”; “Remember that when you die, your ‘in’ box won’t be empty”; and “Do one thing at a time.” You should try to live in the present moment, let others have the glory at times, and lower your tolerance to stress. You can write down your most stubborn positions and see if you can soften them, learn to trust your intuitions, and live each day as if it might be your last. With gentle, supportive suggestions, Dr. Carlson reveals ways to make your actions more peaceful and caring, with the added benefit of making your life more calm and stress-free.

One more blog to go..One more blog to go.. Hi HO the Dairy-- O.. One more blog to go!!!

Moving on to 21!!! Podcasts

In 2005, "podcast" was named the "word of the year" by New Oxford American Dictionary and with the growth of podcasting over the last 24 months, it's easy to see why. Podcasts take many forms, from short 1-10 minute commentaries (like the ones used in this Learning 2.0 program) to much longer in person interviews or panel group discussions. There’s a podcast out there for just about every interest area and the best part about this technology is that you don’t have to have an iPod or an MP3 player to access them.

I did give a look over at http://podcasts.yahoo.com/start Yahoo has a nice tutorial for an overview of podcasts. I then listened to part of one on weight loss and health.. then tried a comedy one which would not download for me to listen. Searched for librarians and came up with book reviews by Nancy Pearl. 85 episodes. Nancy Pearl is a librarian with a love of books so strong it has been officially classified as lust. No matter the mood, moment or reason, she can recommend the perfect literary companion.

rss feed link for the Nancy is : http://kuow.org/rss.php?program=nancy

Youtube.. big HYPE

YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips

well this was one technology I had heard of but had not explored before. Can't say I am impressed with the content I viewed. A video of northern lights, a pig farting song, the destruction of thousands of dominoes that were set in a pretty pattern. I am sure it can be the source of many amusing moments in life but also cluttered with lots of just stupid stuff from the looks of it. Maybe a generation kinda thing but since i haved lived so far 53 yrs without a need for youtube in my life.. I think I can live a few decades more.

doing the 20 out of 23 things dance..YIPEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19 bottles of beer on the wall.....

ohh sorry.. I do mean # 19 on the will this ever end!! Library 23 things training!

must say i did enjoy the little look see at the award winning library 2.0 sites. Travel is something I am always interested in and noted that kayak.com is one that they have listed as well hotelscombined for a good overall hotel search engine.

Next books looked at biblio and see how it works to consolidate the information from independent booksellers and good source for out of print/rare books.

Yelp city guide was a new place for me to see reviews of local restaurants, shopping, nightlife etc. similar to digital city by aol.

My favorite of all is www.oodle.com where it pulls in local and city classified ads in one search engine to give u that one hit wonder access.. and links you to the actual add if needed.

sooo happy happy finished 19..and now only 3 more blogs to go!! well maybe a final epilogue one cuz I read the email we need to make sure we have covered EVERY thing in the 23 in our blog..

Library 23 things # 18 DONE

Testing this online way to word process. Just so I can get my #18 on the Library 23 things accomplished.  Useful tho for those who have a computer without word installed to bypass the microsoft grubby make u pay to get it--kiss

u can sign in again to retrieve and edit which I just did!

Discovering Zoho

I do think this might be a useful site. Having a laptop that didn't have the FREE microsoft word program installed, I see this as a way to avoid the have to have WORD on your machine. I think the Zoho tools and ease of use are superior to the Microsoft product. Lots of options to save as well as send to others via email, store on web and revise as needed. Great find for the frugal who want to be able to have that word processing access with no software required. Interesting selection of 50 templates just prepared for your customization are included as well. Good find!

Playing in the Sandbox! #17

managed to find my way to the Maryland Libraries Sandbox, where I have added my page to the Wiki there. Things that make me smile. Not sure how that all came to be. The usual method of read, try , redo , reread, redo and success!! Seems to be the magic method of discovery here. Can I ever do it again?? hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

#16 What's a WIKI??

A Wiki is a quick-to-build, easy-to-edit website on which all information can be edited, changed, or rewritten by the users or members of the site. It is an incredibly useful tool for collaborative writing, pooling knowledge or exchanging ideas, especially on a subject that changes or needs updating frequently.

The word "Wiki" comes from the Hawaiian phrase "wiki wiki", which is commonly used to indicate something fast.

good things bout Wiki's are : Information is quickly added to database. Draws on expertise of readership. Diverse subjects with information derived from the passsions of the readers.

bad things bout Wiki's are : No content control. Editing wars happen when there might be a controversial subject. Not a scholarly source of information.

Possible uses for Wiki's in the library would to keeping an updated Wiki page for your branch...subject lists, book reviews and policies/best practices.
